The Orbital is the Royal Holloway Students’ Union Magazine. This year we celebrate our Silver Jubilee, and we’re always looking for committed and enthusiastic people to help us go from strength to strength. We want to inspire students to read, write for and be proud of your publication.
Remember, no experience is necessary – we’re just looking for people who want to get involved!
Contributions & Submissions
Whether it’s a hard-hitting piece of investigative journalism, a film review that entirely contradicts the usual viewpoint or a travel feature that recounts your exciting gap year, we welcome all submissions from new and entertaining writing talent. If you’re interested, we’re interested.

Design & Proofing
Of course, it’s not just articles which go into making The Orbital great – we’re constantly looking for fresh ideas for design & enthusiastic comments for improvement. Photographers and illustrators are some great ways to contribute to our fledgling Studio Team.
If design’s not your thing, maybe our proofreading team is for you. If you’re good at catchy headlines and photo captions, or are simply a stickler for spelling and grammar, then we’d like you to give our articles that extra element of clarity and really stand out.
Events & Publicity
Bored of the same old SU nights, seeing the same old posters around campus and being bombarded with the same mundane messages on Facebook? You can help with promotion and booking entertainment while enjoying the opportunity to be on the guestlist for certain Union nights!
If you think you have lots of exciting ideas to raise the profile of The Orbital then we we want to hear from you! Through campus events or Union nights, we need people to help increase participation through all forms. It doesn’t stop there, from designing posters to decoration, we’re sure there’s a way we can reinvigorate The Orbital as an exciting brand.
Marketing & Publishing
Balancing the books and finding enough money to print, The Orbital requires a good business head: sorting out invoices, approaching businesses for advertising opportunities and reducing our environmental impact all play a massive administrative role in the day-to-day running of the publication.
Web Development
New media is integral to our commitment to multimedia journalism, and it takes a lot of work to keep our website going! If you’ve simply got a good idea for our online presence or are a master of coding PHP, HTML and CSS, you could assist our brand new web development team.
