“The first time we played here there were about seven people, the second time there were double that amount…” and tonight, in a small dark room at the Hoxton Bar and Kitchen in Shoreditch, the crowd was absolutely packed. Dog is Dead first formed in 2008, and their popularity has boosted over the past three years. After supporting bands such as Mumford and Sons, Darwin Deez and recently Bombay Bicycle Club on their autumn UK tour, aspiring alternative-rock band Dog Is Dead are headlining their single London show tonight, before heading towards their home-turf in Nottingham. After their first single ‘Young’ released this month, this show was final taster before their highly anticipated album, due in early 2012.
The boys make their appearance on stage, each with their own unique image- these five young lads create a perfect combination of boyish charm and young adulthood in their looks. Amongst their opening songs was ‘River Jordan’. Its mellow introduction breaks into a mighty chorus, enriched by a powerful ensemble of all-male backing vocals; twangy guitars riffs and keyboard chords sweeten these sounds as the lead singer’s strong vocals add an incredible touch.
This was followed by ‘Glockenspiel Song’, a warming and sensational piece of music with a soothing saxophone tune, a catchy chorus and an unexpected a cappella bridge: ‘Oh this town is so electric, since I got the feeling I can’t shut down’ they all sing at the top of their lungs, bringing a new and fresh sound into the room. Their first ever single ‘Young’ then sparks a dance-like feel, fuelled by repetitive upbeat drum beats and the gentle sounds of a xylophone, occasionally dropped into this melody full of vitality. The set drew to an end with the invigorating ‘Hands Down’, where the boys transform the room into a catalyst, their vibrant, kinetic movements onstage accompanying the vibrating guitars and explosive drum beats.
A short set-list packed with delicately written lyrics of youth and the transition to adulthood, alongside some smooth, dreamy, musical arrangements. A band with great talent, and an alternative-edgy style Dog Is Dead are unmissable. With softer guitar resonances, echoing Two Door Cinema Club, entwined with heavier beats and a dash of retro-80s feel, this new act will soon conquer the music scene, evident by their with their ever increasing fan-base…check them out and watch them grow!
