The motion concerning the creation of five new Executive Officers has been withdrawn by the proposers among whom was Daniel Cooper (President-elect), Claudia Wilopo (Campaigns Officer), Amy Richard (Gender Equality Representative) and Jamine Wyeth (Feminism Society President).
The withdrawal is said to be as a result of a desire to engage with a greater number of concerned parties that could be affected as a result of the proposed changes. The proposers stand by the need for representative reform. “We support attempts to strengthen and re-think the existing Inclusion and Representation senate and believe its current representation positions urgently need bolstering.”
It is appears that the increasing strength of the opposing campaign has taken its toll. The proposers were said to to have been “appalled” by an “ignorance and lack of concern for liberation based campaigns.”
“Certain people who expressed disagreement with the motion also made personal attacks on certain individuals who were supporting the motion; this was very upsetting, had no relevance to the topics at hand, contributed nothing to a good debate and was not conducive to constructing a space in which people felt comfortable discussing issues which affect them and their SU.”
The motion is likely to be returned to in a possibly revised form following further debate on this highly contentious issue.
